Some Unusual Wedding Venues

Use your own photo - Open out - 250Weddings are to be held in a railway carriage at the newly-restored Royal Deeside Railway, Crathes for the very first time. The first wedding will be between Aberdeen couple Mike Smith and Tina Scott. They plan to tie the knot this week in the guard's area of one of the coaches, followed by a train ride. Bridal parties have been on the railway before, but it has never been used for a wedding ceremony. The carriage will specially decorated for the event and we'll bring you photos as soon as we can! In the meantime, we have a list of some other unusual wedding venues: Tunnels Beaches in North Devon is a spectacular venue. With a private, secluded garden overlooking the sea and a beach with hand-carved tunnels through the cliffs, this is one stunning venue. While it might not be every one's first choice, The Garlic Farm is a unique and inspiring location for a wedding. Set in the beautiful Arreton Valley it is 15 minutes from the ports of Ryde and Fishbourne, so is easily accessible from the mainland. If you like the sound of the view from the top of a mountain but don't actually want to venture outside, then the CairnGorm Mountains are the venue for you. At the top of a National Park in the heart of the Highlands nestles the fine dining Ptarmigan restaurant. So both the food and the views will make your mouth water! For something further South, Westminster council have now granted approval for civil partnership ceremonies and marriages to be held in the Palace of Westminster for the first time. Until now only MPs, peers, certain parliamentary officials and their families were allowed to get married in Parliament. In a bid to modernise Parliament, members of the public, gay and straight, will be able to book their weddings on Parliament’s website. If too many people apply, officials are likely to run a ballot to select the lucky couples. Two rooms have been approved as the venues for the civil ceremonies: the Jubilee Room and the MP's dining hall. The Absolut Icebar has become the first venue in the heart of London to allow marriages in temperatures of minus 5 degrees. Imagine the day: you start with the ceremony being held in the ethereal surroundings of the icebar, sweeping down an aisle constructed of the purest ice harvested from the Torne River in Sweden. Then, once the 'I do's' are over with you can retire to the warm and intimate atmosphere of the Below Zero restaurant, with its award-winning chef. These are just a few of the unique venues that we know about, but feel free to share the venues that you know about too. Whichever venue you decide upon, be sure to order your wedding invitations well in advance so that you can give your guests plenty of notice to attend your wedding day. When you order your wedding invitations, remember to order just one card per couple or family and not one for every person - a very easy mistake to make, believe us!

Important Things to Include on DIY Retirement Invitations

After working for decades, many people like to celebrate the fact that they are retiring. They like to involve their friends and co-workers to be able to say goodbye and the best way of doing that is with a party. This is when retirement invitations are needed. There are many different designs available but one thing that you could do is look at making your own. DIY retirement invitations are becoming extremely popular. They are much cheaper than buying a set and you can make them personalised. There are just a few things that you need to think about. The first is to match your theme or scheme, if you are going to have one. This is a great way to let your guests know if there is going to be a fancy dress theme for the event. It is important to include the date, time and place of the event for your guests to know where they are going and when they need to be there. You may want to include a map if you are holding the retirement party in a place out of the way or one that is hard to find. However, a lot of people now have sat navs or navigation on their phones. It is your choice over whether you do make your own or buy a set or retirement invitations. There are pros and cons to both options. Do something that works for you and the party that you have planned for your retirement. Retirement invitations

One Tiny Baby = Lots of Fuss!

Use-Your-Own-Photo-Boys-Christening-Personalised-LargeIsn't it amazing how one little baby can create so much fuss! When it comes to your baby's Christening the list of preparations can sometimes leave you feeling as stressed as if you were organising a wedding! Once you have set a date for your baby's big day, there are lots of decisions which need to be made. Like a wedding, there is the venue to consider, catering, decoration, gifts...the list can go on and on. With all of the things to think about, you mustn't forget to pay due attention to the actual process of inviting your loved ones and sending out Christening invitations for your baby. Christening invitations for your baby's special day are the ideal way to let all of your friends and family know about the big occasion. Invites are available in a number of styles to suit whatever theme you have in mind - and you can even choose personalised Christening invitations featuring your baby's photo for that extra special touch. Once the christening invites are sorted, don't forget all of the other details such as you baby's outfit for the ceremony, purchasing a Christening cake, and arranging for there to be guest books to sign throughout the event and photo albums to put all of the pictures in afterwards. You may want to suggest a Christening photo album for anyone who asks which gift they should buy - you are bound to need several as everyone will be taking snaps on the day and will probably send copies onto you afterwards. Once you have filled up the baby photo albums with Christening snaps, you can use them to continue taking memories of your baby as he or she grows. As with any special family occasion, there's always a lot to consider. But, with careful planning and an organised mind, there should be nothing to worry about!

Wedding Invitations – What Information Do Your Guests Need?

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life. It can take months, or even years, of meticulous planning to create a day that you and your guests will never forget. Your wedding invitations are an important part of the planning process. Good invitations should fully inform your guests of the arrangements. A happy, well-informed guest will be able to fully relax and share in your special day.

Save The Date

Before you send out your main wedding invitations, it’s a good idea to send some save the date magnets to your guests. This will help remind your guests of the important event, and help them make sure they don’t arrange something else on the same day! It will also give you a chance to finalise your guest list before you confirm your wedding venue and other plans. Send out your save the date cards about 6 months before the wedding date. Your wedding invitation cards should be sent out about 2 months before the big day. They should contain a lot more details than the save the date cards, including the following:

Venue and Accommodation

Your wedding venue should be given pride of place on your invitations. Obviously, your guests will need to know where they should go for your ceremony and reception, but they may also need some more information about the venue. Some of your guests may want to stay overnight, so let them know if there is any accommodation near to the venue. Enquire with local hotels to see if you can get a special room rate for wedding guests.

Travel Information

Some of your wedding guests may be travelling from outside your local area. They are likely to appreciate some information about how to travel to the venue. Include the roads they should take to get there, and list some nearby landmarks so they don’t get lost! Remember that not every guest will be travelling by car, so include information about public transport and local taxi firms on your wedding invites.

Wedding List

Although it was once seen as impolite to mention your wedding list in your invitation, over time it’s become increasingly acceptable. Many guests will be grateful for the information, so they can be sure they’re buying you a gift you will truly appreciate. However, you should make it clear on your invitations that your wedding guests aren’t expected to buy you a present.

Dress Code

Most of your guests will know they should dress smartly for you wedding. Only mention a dress code on your invitations if your venue has specific requirements, such as black tie. You may also want to let your guests know if your wedding is to have a specific theme. You can also list details of local costumiers so they can easily find something appropriate to wear. Perfecting your wedding invitations can take time and thought. But, knowing your guests are well-informed will enable you to relax and enjoy preparing for your big day!

Celebrity Wedding: Anne Hathaway

Black & Pink - Landscape-600It's just been announced that Anne Hathaway will be getting married next year! Here at The Card Gallery we just love a celebrity wedding or new celebrity baby and couldn't be happier for the gorgeous 29-year-old star (did we mention we're a fan of her films too!) Anne got engaged to Adam Schulman in November last year after three years of dating. Quite a long engagement we think, but then again she has been rather busy with blockbusters such as Valentines Day, Les Miserables, and the new Batman installment The Dark Knight Rises. Now that the Batman biggie has finished, we think it'll be earlier in the year rather than later for what is sure to be some lavish nuptials. Anne said in an interview: "We're getting married, probably sometime next year-ish. Not this year, its too big with two films coming out. I haven't started planning yet. I was filming 'Les Mis' when we decided to do it, and there was no way I could think about anything wedding-related with my head in the space it was in then. I've been so busy since then, I've not even decided what sort of ceremony I want." We wonder whether she'll be keeping her new short hair crop for the wedding or growing it in time for the wedding. She had her long hair cut into a crop for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables and says that changing her look was far more frightening than anything else she has ever done for her work! She admitted in Hello Magazine: "I hadn't realised how much I played with my hair. I was really scared about who I would be when I came out the other side. Who would have thought hair would have such power? I have to say, of all the things I've done for a role - learning to jump out of windows, learning to do back flips, changing my body shape - cutting my hair was by far the scariest thing I've ever done. I've learned to embrace the short hair now and feel better for it. And I think people find me more approachable, people have come up to me to tell me they like it, which is very nice." We imagine like everything else, the beautiful wedding table plans for the wedding will be stunning. Our bets for the names for the wedding table plans include: former co-stars Christian Bale, Kate Hudson, and Jake Gyllenhall. Fellow campaigners for anti-bullying: Ian Somerhalder and Jenny McCarthy. Feeding America fellow fundraisers: Jessica Alba, Ben Affleck, and Scarlet Johansson. We would love to be considered for one of those table plans if you're reading Anne!

Thinking about your Wedding Photo Albums

Wedding Photo AlbumsWhen it comes to organising your wedding day, there are so many different things that you can do to make your day as memorable as possible. One of the most important of these is to hire a good wedding photographer. Wedding photographers will have a number of different packages that you can choose from, and these range from person to person. Some photographers have a package where you pay only for their time as part of your package and then all prints will be in addition to the initial hire cost. Others will provide a specified number of prints in with your package and then there will be further options for larger prints or canvas options. Most wedding photographers will now use digital equipment and will have the digital images that may also be included in the package price so that you can arrange for reprints for your family and friends yourselves. If you opt for a complete photography package you may be offered more than one photographer who will stay with you for the entire day and take a large number of pictures - both formal and informal. You may also wish for the photographer to be there quite early and take picture of everybody getting prepared for the wedding. Your finished wedding photos may be given to you in a designated photo album - but more often than not, you'll want to pick out a special album for yourselves. This is why its worth thinking about wedding photo albums when you are deciding on your stationery. By thinking about your wedding photo albums at this early stage, you can get an album which co-ordinates with the rest of your wedding stationery.

Contact your Long Losties!

Save the Date MagnetsMost people's lives are so hectic in these modern times that you can often completely lose touch with certain people - for instance old work colleagues that you spent every day of the week with for years, or school friends that you were once inseparable from. You get to certain points in your life when you get the opportunity to reconnect with these friends who have fallen by the wayside, and one of these times is when you are getting married. A wedding day is one of those very special days when all of the important people in your life come together to celebrate your big day with you. To make that first step in contacting your long lost friends (and family in some cases), you can send out your save the date cards and magnets to your intended wedding guests. Rather that calling them up out of the blue and springing your wedding upon them (and pressuring them into attending!), save the date cards and magnets will give them time to check their diaries and think about whether they can make your wedding or not. Don’t put off contacting your long losties - it might be a long shot with certain people (that backpacking girl you went travelling all over Australia with for a year and you only have her last known address in Borneo!) but the payoff is well worth it if they RSVP with a great big 'Yes please!'

Your Wedding Invitations

Wedding-U-White-Lily-Wedding-Invitation-Personalised-600Planning out the guest list for your wedding can be one of the most difficult parts. It is your guest list which will impact on every other aspect of your wedding such as the table plans, place cards and working out just how much stationery you're going to need. And, just when you think you've cracked it, your mum points out that you've forgotten your great aunt twice removed and you need to rethink your list! When it comes to writing your guest list, you should already have decided on roughly how many guests you want to invite based on the type of venue you have gone for (you won't be able to fill a stately home if it's just the two of you plus witnesses and, likewise, a tiny chapel won't fit 300 of your closest family and friends!) Constructing your guest list based upon the venue you want is crucial, because you will need to know the size of the tables, as well as the general layout of the room. If tables are spaced too far apart, guests can feel distant and isolated...too close together and they will feel penned in. Once you have finalised your guest list, you can work out how many people you need to send your wedding invitations to. Remember, you only need one invitation per couple or family, so having 200 guests doesn't necessarily mean that you will need to send out 200 invites! When it comes to sending out your wedding invitations, send them out in plenty of time and give your guests lots of time to respond. It's always worth having a list of backup guests, should a number of your guests not be able to make it to your wedding - although obviously it's probably worth keeping it to yourselves that they were on the reserve list!

Celebrity Wedding: Alec Baldwin

Wedding AW - Black and White Swirls - Table-Plan-Landscape-600Alec Baldwin's recent wedding to Hilaria Thomas was described as 'incredible' by younger brother Stephen Baldwin. The youngest Baldwin brother had a great day at the nuptials between the pair in New York last month, and he claims that he couldn't be happier for his sibling. He said: "The wedding was fantastic. It was incredible, beautiful, went off without a hitch. Hilaria was gorgeous, Alec was over the moon. I can't be more happy for him, he looks great and he's in love and I wish him all the best. His new wife is a yoga instructor, so obviously you're seeing Alec look so well as a result of the downward dog, so to speak", he joked. The wedding accomodated many hundreds of celebrity guests and we were left wondering how many wedding tables plans were needed for the event? If you would like advice on how many wedding table plans to order for your (hopefully smaller!) wedding, give us a call - we'd love to hear from you!
Sending Wedding Thank You Cards: A Personal Touch

Sending Wedding Thank You Cards: A Personal Touch

David Cameron has said that he has bucked the modern trend of men wearing wedding rings, following the example of his father’s generation. According to jewellers, the male wedding band has become almost universal in the past decade, with 90 per cent of couples buying two rings rather than one. They have also become increasingly elaborate, with average prices rising sevenfold and even something of a status symbol in some circles. Mr Cameron, however, told women’s magazine Glamour that he has "never worn a watch or a ring". He added that he simply "never got used to" wearing anything on his hands. In doing so, Mr Cameron is following the example of an older generation. Jo Bryant, an etiquette adviser at Debretts, said: “Historically there is a little bit of a thing among certain generations who said that men don’t wear jewellery. I think younger men generally are more likely to wear a wedding ring but there is no set etiquette and it really is a matter of personal choice. It is something for the couple to decide – although there are obviously some women out there who are quite keen for their husband to wear a ring as a symbol of marriage. But we would never say that men should or shouldn't. Traditionally when it came to jewellery men would have been more in favour of wearing signet rings.” It follows surprise last year when it emerged that Prince William would not be wearing a ring after his wedding to Catherine Middleton. The Prince could be said to have been following family tradition in that his grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh does not wear a wedding band. But when his father, the Prince of Wales, married the Duchess of Cornwall in 2005 he opted for a wedding band cast in the same Welsh gold as his wife’s. While the custom of women wearing a ring at marriage can be traced back to ancient Egypt, it only became common among men in the second half of the 20th Century. It began during the Second World War when men sent off to fight began wearing rings as a comforting reminder of home. Many of our customers see matching wedding rings as one of the basics of their wedding planning and, indeed, some couples even feature a picture of their matching entwined hands when it comes to sending wedding thank you cards with our 'use your own photo' designs.
