How Many Readings Do You Need for a Church Wedding?

White Country Bouquet Order of Service Concertina

If you're having a church wedding, you may be wondering how many readings you actually need for your ceremony. We are here to help!

Scroll down to read our handy guide.

Stick with tradition

If you want to follow tradition, we recommend you have between two and three.

You don't want to have too many as this will make your ceremony quite long. However, it is lovely to have some of your favourite readings at your wedding, and not something that you want to miss.

However, if you do want to have more than three, that's completely up to you! Feel free to add as many readings as you feel is appropriate.

How many biblical readings should you have?

If you're having a church wedding, you'll want to have at least one biblical reading. Some churches will make this a requirement, so it is quite important to remember.

Your other readings may want to be something a bit shorter, such as your favourite poem or a page from a book you love. Make sure you doublecheck that this is okay with your vicar first though, as some churches are stricter about what readings are allowed. They may insist that all readings are from the Bible.

How long should a reading be?

We recommend that they should be less than five minutes. This is the perfect amount of time to keep guests engaged and make sure they really listen to what is being said, which is important if the piece means a lot to you.
